Cor ad Cor: Academical and Devotional Essays is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal of the Saint John Henry Newman Association of America, published twice yearly in Winter and Summer. This journal sprouted from the seedbed of an earlier, privately published prototype appearing in one issue: Word in Season, which appeared in 2024, legacy copies of which may be purchased here[insert hyperlink?] while stock remains.
Cor ad Cor invites English-language academic essays, and book reviews, as well as works of a devotional or appreciative nature, which may include, but are not limited to, reflections, meditations, or homilies, concerning the life, work, and milieu of St. John Henry Newman and his interlocutors. Because the journal is interdisciplinary, submissions, including formal academic articles, should be written with a broad audience in mind. For example, an article treating a theological question with which Newman had been engaged might be read by a non-theologian, or an article treating the historical situation of Catholics in England in the mid-nineteenth century might be read by a non-historian. Thus, authors writing academic articles for Cor ad Cor should endeavor to offer a genuine contribution to knowledge while manifesting the heart of a teacher aware of an audience in which there are students and not only direct peers, seeking to learn: Cor ad cor loquitur.
Cor ad Cor accepts only original works. The phrase, “original works,” is defined as, “works that have not appeared in print or online elsewhere in English, in whole or in substantial part.” Revised conference papers, course papers, or public lectures or addresses, provided they have not been previously published, are considered “original works” under our editorial policy.
Submissions to Cor ad Cor should generally adhere to the following table for word-count:
Formal academic articles: 3,000 – 13,000 words
Book reviews: 900 – 2,500 words
All other pieces: < 6,000 words
